Bienvenidos

Welcome to the Classroom

I am very proud of the learning environment we have built at the Center for Computer Studies.  I have been putting the A in STEAM education here for the last 20+ years. I use art history to connect students to the language of creative software and build original art.

Problem solving is the playground of artists and digital creatives.  I use art history as a means of connecting the language and techniques of artists to digital interfaces, and engage students in the creative process of using software to make art. This process takes learners from the building blocks of idea development through the language of materials and process, and ultimately, challenges them to see beyond software variables to their final vision.

I believe connecting language to art process allows students to transfer their knowledge to digital applications. It opens doors for developers &  programmers to understanding the visual power the art department has in presenting the final code to the user.   The language of art history empowers students suffering with imposter syndrome to enter and move in the academically credentialed areas of any industry.  Even if a student never takes another computer or art class, the study of art & software provides skills to appreciate and talk about art beyond what they like.

the Classroom

The Center for Computer Studies at Carl Hayden Community High School in metropolitan Phoenix Arizona has been my home for over 2 decades.  We are a comprehensive program offering beginning to advanced classes in software (Python, Java), cybersecurity, art, video and animation.

    Video

    Ofrenda for Alan Turing

This memorial video for the Day of the Dead combines intro projects in animation, video and sound editing with original writing and soundtrack recording.  As I teach, I create and model for students.  Teacher as lead learner is a computer science classroom model,

much like an artist's open studio.

    Student Collaboration in the Arts

Here a pre-pandemic team of Falcons use their special effects skills in a storyboard to create a live action feature.

    Online Instruction

Here is an example of an instruction video for building software skills using art history as the foundation for understanding a technical concept. Although this technique is out of date, it is a good example of how I change my content to keep up with what the software can do.
