the work of Michele Delgado
My art reflects my obsession with memory, real and digital, and the magical world of remembering. I am fascinated with the line where memory evolves into learning and this has been a major theme of both my artwork and classroom. I believe memory is junk drawer of emotions, fragments of modern life, weird stuff from personal collections, recycled objects, splinters of time. My desert roots, Mexican heritage and the years I spent in Japan influence my motif and color palette. These influences and textures materialize as layered pictures, moving and still. Batik and video, painting and animation, piñata sculpture, sugar skulls, and performance art are composed of these layers. My experience with stereotypes and crossing cultural barriers helps me choose my symbols, mixing them in narratives about modern life and it's challenges.
Today, I continue to work in all mediums in my North Phoenix studio and ironically, teaching and performance art have a lot in common.
Michele Delgado is an artist and STEAM educator in the Phoenix metro area. Working in many mediums, but always examining the relationship between technology and art, memory and learning, and life cycles. As a public school teacher specializing in multimedia computer science, she specializes in the STEAM class room and creating a curriculum which uses art history to create a foundation for the creative use of computer science, programming and multimedia applications.
Problem solving is the playground of artists and digital creatives. I use art history as a means of connecting the language and techniques of artists to digital interfaces, and engage students in the creative process of using software to make art. This process takes learners from the building blocks of idea development through the language of materials and process, and ultimately, challenges them to see beyond software variables to their final vision.
I believe connecting language to art process allows students to power through and transfer their knowledge digital applications. It opens doors for developers & programmers to understanding the visual power of art the art department has in presenting the final code tothe user. The language of high art empowers students suffering with imposter syndrome to enter and move in the academically credentialed areas of any industry. Even if a student never takes another computer or art class, the study of art & software provides skills to appreciate and talk about art beyond what they like.
